Cadaveric liver transplant successful, patient to walk out of hospital today

Fifty-three-year-old businessman from Bhosari, Rajiv Khare (name changed), who has been in and out of hospitals for treatment of liver cirrhosis will on Saturday become the first patient to be discharged from Ruby Hall Clinic after a complex liver transplant surgery.

The ex-alcoholic (he gave up alcohol four years ago) has been suffering from various abdominal infections apart from jaundice for the past two years. He got a cadaveric liver transplanted on him.

Bomi Bhote, chief executive officer of Ruby Hall Clinic told Newsline that the patient who preferred not to disclose his name will be discharged on Saturday. According to Dr Harshal Rajekar, chief transplant surgeon at Ruby Hall Clinic, the patient was almost normal.

However, after he is discharged, he will have four-six weeks of intensive rehabilitation in terms of proper diet, nutrition and exercise so that he can be termed fit. Due to the complex nature of the surgery, the peri-operative period is crucial to the patient's recovery, Rajekar said.

Ruby Hall Clinic had conducted its first attempt at a cadaveric liver transplant in October last year. The patient had accepted the liver but died. Rajekar said this was the second liver transplant operation at Ruby Hall Clinic.

The patient was listed to receive a cadaveric donor.

The patient received the liver from a road accident victim who was declared brain dead at Aditya Birla Hospital. The victim's relatives had agreed to donate the kidneys, liver and other organs. "On January 31, the entire liver was harvested and the procedure took 3-4 hours. After that we prepared the patient at Ruby Hall Clinic and transplanted the liver in an operation that took eight to nine hours," Rajekar said.

We had a team of experts from Apollo Hospital, Chennai, who along with the team conducted the liver transplant, Dr Amrita Vaidya, administrator, liver transplant unit at Ruby Hall Clinic said.
