The voices demanding disclosure of assets by judges,in compliance with the Central Information Commissions order, seems to be getting louder every day. Echoing the views of jurist Fali S Nariman, another legal luminary P P Rao on Thursday asked judges to conduct themselves in a manner that is befitting of their stature. Speaking at a seminar here on Legality and Propriety of Disclosure of Assets by Judges,Rao said, judges should not only be clean, they should also appear clean. People are more agitated about corruption in the judiciary than corruption in other organs of the state. We have seen what happened in Punjab,Rajasthan,Bombay and other High Courts. We cannot shut our eyes, pointed out Rao as he referred to instances of judicial corruption in different parts of the country in recent times. Rao further felt that when it is mandatory for people contesting elections to declare their asset, the same rule should apply to judges. Former Attorney General Soli J Sorabjee, who was also present at the function, felt,it would be help in bringing transparency in the system as a whole.
