The state parliamentary board of the Samajwadi Party wants that the State Women's Commission (SWC) should have members at divisional level. At a meeting held on Thursday, which was chaired by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, the board urged party president Mulayam Singh Yadav to take a final call on the matter.
At present, the SWC can have a chairperson with the status of minister of state, two vice-chairpersons with the status of deputy minister, and 17 members. Any change in its composition will require change in the UP Women's Commission Act. Recently, the SP government has appointed Zareena Usmani as chairperson, along with Suman Yadav and Surbhi Shukla as vice-chairpersons.
The board recommended that the commission should have a member in every division and that they should be graduates. The state has 18 divisions. Presently, the members are appointed at the headquarters and they are assigned districts by the chairperson as part of the board's internal arrangement. The board also discussed selection of candidates for graduates and teachers constiuencies in the Legislative Council. A total of 18 applications have been received by the SP for the graduates constituency and 7 for the teachers constituency.
