Canada PM did not visit Pal Dhaba due to bylaw violations

The building bylaws' violations at Pal Dhaba in Sector 28, which was originally chosen for the Canadian delegation led by the Prime Minister Stephan Harper to dine in and savour Indian delicacies, led to the last-minute change in the venue.

According to officials of the UT Estate Office, a notice under the Estate Rules was served upon the dhaba a month ago regarding the building bylaws violations.

The violations include a shed on the roof, besides an illegal joining of two showrooms. The matter is now pending before the court of Assistant Estate Officer Rahul Gupta.

In any case, while the matter is still pending, the penalty charges are being calculated as per the norms and the owner will have to pay the same from the date of issuance of the notice, said an official.

Harper's visit to the dhaba, which was scheduled for November 7, was cancelled by the Canadian Prime Minister's office and Canadian Consulate. It was later rescheduled and the PM along with his delegation dined at another dhaba in the same sector.

A senior official of the UT Administration said that they had conveyed to the Canadian authorities that the Estate Office had issued a notice to Pal Dhaba for violation of building bylaws and that Administration officials had suggested that it would not be appropriate if such a dignitary dines at a place which has violated laws.

Officials further added that they had conveyed their message to the authorities and the final call on where to dine was taken by the Canadian authorities.
