Cancer patients celebrate life

Tiny tots performed like small stars at the celebration of the Cancer Survivors' Day and International Childhood Cancer Day by the Sahayta Cancer Sahyog at the Government Home Science College on Saturday, even as some of them continued to wear green masks and a nose-pipe due to cancer.
The resilient spirit of the cancer patients was brought forward in a play 'Nayee Subah' performed by cancer survivors and Sahayta volunteers, including Renu Sehgal, President, Sahayta, and other volunteers, namely Daman Mangat, Gurpreet Khaira, Ved Nanda and Indira Narula. "We wanted to bring a change in the mindset of most of the people in the society who feel that even after cancer is diagnosed, it is an end of life," said Renu Sehgal.
On the occasion, the Jeevan Shakti Award was presented to Shikha, Bal Jeevan Shakti award to Ajan Jot and Niharika and mementos were given to Sahayta supporters. Also, the bereaved families who lost their dear ones to cancer gave away Jeevan Sahayta and Jeevan Sahara awards to needy and deserving persons.
In pursuit of their goal to provide holistic help to cancer patients, Dr Avdesh Pandey, Associate Professor, Head, Dept of Radiotherapy and Oncology, GMCH gave a talk on cancer while Dr Pankaj Malhotra from PGIMER lauded Sahayta for donating a machine worth Rs 50 lakh which is used to conduct a test for cancer.
The Chief Guest, Dr Yogesh K Chawla, Director, PGI in his address, praised the efforts of Sahayta volunteers and congratulated them for making 'Celebration of Life' as the theme of celebrations.
Eminent doctors from PGI, cancer survivors, Sahayta volunteers, patients and their families and esteemed donors and supporters attended the function.
