Arsenic, a toxic element that can cause cancer, was found in underground water that was pumped out for drinking at Basant Nagar village. The health department had taken nine samples of drinking water from the hand pumps of the village.
After examination, the toxic element was found in two of the nine samples of drinking water. The report states that the samples were recently tested at State Public Health Laboratory Punjab, Chandigarh.
The water was found 'unfit for drinking' due to the presence of arsenic and excessive quantity of fluoride, said a department official. The local sub-divisional magistrate reportedly sent a copy of the report to the Kapurthala deputy commissioner.
Congress leader and former Punjab minister Joginder Singh Mann released a copy of the report to media on Monday, saying he will meet the deputy commissioner and take up the matter.
