Jaspal Singh (name changed) a resident of Ludhiana was recently operated on his left leg at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER). A few days later,he came to the OPD of PGIs orthopedic department to get his stitches removed. But even after reaching PGI from Ludhiana around 10 am,he was not able to see a doctor no trolley was available to take him inside from the parking lot. After over a two-and-a-half-hour struggle, his brother-in-law managed to get hold of a trolley.
Such cases are similar at the PGI. It is a usual scene for hundreds of patients, who visit the premier institute for check-ups after surgeries,to struggle to get a trolley or a wheelchair that ferry patients to the OPDs of different departments.
On any given day, there are about 350 to 400 trolleys and another 200 wheelchairs meant for patients at the OPDs and the emergency ward. But with over 5,000 patients daily visiting the OPDs alone, and with more than 300 per cent occupancy of the emergency ward, even this is not enough.
Many a times, the patients or their relatives leave the trolleys or wheelchairs at the departments they visit, making it inconvenient for others to locate them. Moreover,we keep on adding new trolleys and wheelchairs on a regular basis for the convenience of patients, said PGI spokesperson Manju Wadwalkar.
According to the authorities, those visiting departments such as orthopedic and the emergency ward need trolleys, the rest can use wheelchairs. At times, patient use trolleys as vans to ferry their own belongings, said a source in the institute.
