  • Pollution in the Capital is one of the biggest concerns of the state government. In a bid to control pollution in the Capital, it has decided to introduce a remote sensing technology to measure the pollution level of all vehicles. Newsline takes a look at areas besides vehicular pollution that are a cause for worry.

    * Only about 341.39 million gallons per day (MGD) of sewage is being treated by 23 DJB sewage plants, as against their installed capacity of 512.40 MGD.

    * Industrial wastewater in Delhi is about 40 MGD, while around 6,500 metric tonnes of solid waste is generated every day in Delhi, of which around 5,500 metric tonnes of waste is cleared by the MCD and the NDMC.

    * It is estimated that 3,000 metric tonnes of air pollutants are emitted every day in Delhi. The sources of air pollution in Delhi include emissions from vehicles (67 per cent), coal-based thermal power plants (13 per cent), industrial units (12 per cent) and domestic (8 per cent).

    * The state government is taking steps to reduce vehicular pollution by 2010. An Air Ambience Fund of Rs 40 crore will be created by March 2009 by charging a fee on the sale of diesel at the rate of Rs 0.25 per litre.

    * Noise pollution levels in the Capital range from 59 to 65 dB (A) during the day, against the permissible limit of 55 dB (A).

    * The survey says all major commercial areas remain noisier than the tolerable limit of 65 dB (A), with Chandni Chowk remaining highly noisy throughout the day.
