It was a grand homecoming for the new Captain of Punjab Congress,as thousands of Congress supporters welcomed their new chief and former CM Capt Amarinder Singh on his first visit to his hometown after taking over the reins of Punjab Congress.
Elated by the enormous response at his hometown,Capt Amarinder Singh told The Indian Express that,I am moved by the unprecedented affection shown by the people. I am overwhelmed and touched by the response and am grateful for the affection bestowed on me.
The new Congress chief was accorded rousing receptions at numerous places along the Zirakpur-Patiala route and it took him almost seven hours to reach his home in Patiala, starting from Zirakpur at 11 a.m.
Supporters of the former CM lined up along the Zirakpur-Patiala highway, showering petals on him and honouring him with flowers, shawls, siropas and swords, amidst the bursting of crackers.
Commuters suffered a lot due to the road show,as traffic was blocked at a number of places along the highway and public transport was diverted through Sirhind, due to which people living in Banur,Rajpura and Bahadurgarh suffered. Accompanied by his wife and Union minister Preneet Kaur and son Raninder Singh,Capt Amarinder Singh was first accorded a warm welcome at Zirakpur, followed by numerous receptions along the highway till Patiala. He was accompanied by former ministers Lal Singh and Surinder Singla on his flower-bedecked Gypsy.
Some of his supporters had also arranged a small aeroplane to shower flowers and petals on Capt Amarinders cavalcade enroute to Patiala, while many others had arranged langars for the Congress supporters in the former CMs cavalcade.
