The uncertainty over the affairs of the Punjab unit of the Congress was put to an end on Wednesday with Leader of Opposition Rajinder Kaur Bhattal being divested of the responsibility of the state unit chief. Mohinder Kaypee, who is the working president of the state Congress, will replace her till the AICC decides upon a regular head. Bhattal, who will continue to be the Leader of Opposition, had submitted her resignation as the state Congress chief ahead of the reshuffle.
What must have come as a greater dismay for Bhattal is that her arch rival in the party Capt Amarinder Singh, marginalised for some time by the high command, has made a comeback, being appointed as the chairman of the state election campaign committee. Ashwani Sekeri, a former minister, will work along with Singh as convener of the committee. The decision by the high command is being viewed as a step to put its house in order in the backdrop of a growing Bhattal-Singh feud.
Though Singh had been sidelined ever since the party lost the Assembly polls, the Congress saw as bleak its chances to win the ensuing election with him out of action.
