Car flies off Lajpat Nagar flyover,teen killed

A teenage boy died on the spot when the car he was driving skidded and flew over the Lajpat Nagar flyover railings before crashing into a government warehouse in the early hours of Thursday.

A teenage boy died on the spot when the car he was driving skidded and flew over the Lajpat Nagar flyover railings before crashing into a government warehouse in the early hours of Thursday. The boy,identified as Mrinal Deep Singh (17),was driving towards Noida from Nehru Place when the incident took place around 3 am,police said.

A law student,Mrinal Deep was speeding in a Honda Civic when the vehicle hit the footpath,took off and went over the railings,police said.

A senior police officer said,“He went for a party to a discotheque in Nehru Place. He had come from Sonepat,and was driving very fast and lost control of the car. After travelling 100 metres,the car rammed into the footpath and flew off the Lajpat Nagar flyover. The guards of the Public Works Department warehouse,into which the car crashed,informed police.”

Mrinal Deep was a 1st year law student at the Jindal Law College in Sonepat and was staying in a hostel.

“He was a minor and did not have a driving licence. When we reached the spot,the car was lying overturned and completely damaged. The boy died on the spot,” police said.

His father is Vice President,Engineer and Projects at Indraprastha Gas Limited.

The police recovered Mrinal Deep’s identity card along with some papers. A case has been registered at the Lajpat Nagar police station.

Additional Commissioner of Police (South East Delhi),Ajay Chaudhry,said,“We are waiting for the post-mortem report. Further investigation will be done once the report is out.”

Mrinal Deep’s shocked family members said he was to celebrate his 18th birthday in October.

His body was taken to his residence in Sector 39,Noida after the post-mortem at the AIIMS Trauma Centre.

A prayer meeting was held at a gurudwara later in the day.

Rajeev Maini,a family friend who attended the prayer meeting, said,“The incident has shaken the family,it is very unfortunate. We got a call at four in the morning,I still can’t believe that he is no more”.

Gurpreet,related to Mrinal Deep,said,“He had come to the party from Sonepat. I was deeply shocked when I got the news as he was just 17 years old. It is his birthday next month.”

Mrinal was the eldest of the two sons in the family.
