A car driver hit three volunteers and a beat constable of the Chandigarh Police at a naka in Sector 30 on Friday.

Trying to escape, the car driver hit another car at the Sector 31 light point near Kalibari Mandir where he was nabbed by the police. The injured and the accused were taken to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32.

The incident occurred at a naka near Agrasen Bhawan, Sector 30, at 11.45 am when a white car, being driven by Gurpreet Singh, a resident of Phase 4 Mohali, came speeding from Sector 30 and was going towards IT park. Three volunteers of the Chandigarh Police, Jasbir Singh, Swaran Singh and Baljinder Kaur, were standing on the pavement along with a beat constable. Gurpreet came speeding towards the four, injuring the four. The three volunteers were rushed to GMCH-32. The beat constable had a minor bruise and was given first aid at the naka itself.

Gurpreet fled towards Mohali and hit another car at a light point in Ramdarbar, waiting for the green signal. He suffered minor injuries and was taken to GMCH and remained unconscious till evening. By then a case of attempt to murder and rash driving was registered by the police.

Industrial Area SHO Inspector Narinder Patial said, "It seemed like Gurpreet was under the influence of some narcotic though he is saying he does not take intoxicants. We are waiting for the medical reports from GMCH to establish this." The accused had been snoring while he was being treated at the hospital.

Shalinder, whose car was hit on the Ramdarbar light point, however, did not make a complaint and settled for a compromise.

Baljinder Kaur, one of the injured, said, "I was hurt a few days ago and was sitting in a chair. We were looking after the naka and the other three were standing near me. This white car came rushing towards us. We had not even stopped him but maybe he got nervous seeing a naka."
