  • Climate change can be addressed while meeting the energy demands for development over the years, says a study commissioned by European Renewable Energy Council and Greenpeace. If guidelines mentioned in the report are implemented, carbon emissions can be cut down by four per cent by 2050, the study says.

“The Indian scenario up to 2050 has been developed to address how India can combat climate change while maintaining development. Assuming an average economic growth of 3.9 per cent in the coming decades in the business, CO2 emissions will increase three fold by 2050,” said K Srinivas, Climate and Energy Campaigner, Greenpeace.

The report titled, ‘Energy Revolution Scenario’, provides solutions to increase renewable energy usage and decrease consumption by 50 per cent by incorporating energy efficiency measures, he said.

“Looking at the same kind of supply scenario, only proven and tested technologies have been suggested in the report rather than the new untested techniques like carbon capture. We have to use more renewable energy and incorporate more energy-efficiency measures,” said Anantha Padmanabhan, executive director of Greenpeace India.

“We have already presented the report to the Union Minister of Power and would soon give it to the Finance Minister for consideration,” said Padmanabhan. The 100-page report, has been developed by specialists of the Institute of Technical Thermodynamics at the German Aerospace Centre.
