A 43-year-old cardiologist was shot dead in central Delhi early Wednesday morning allegedly by a man against whom his maid had complained of harassment, police said.
The incident was reported from Rajinder Nagar around 2.45 am and the victim has been identified as Sanjeev Dhawan, who worked with the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Devesh Srivastava, Additional Commissioner of Police (Central), said.
He was rushed to Ganga Ram Hospital where he was declared brought dead. The suspect Dharmendra Kumar has been arrested.
A senior police official said investigations have revealed that the doctor was not the actual target.
He said Kumar had gone there looking for a maid who worked with the family. The maid had earlier complained to Dhawan that Kumar was "harassing" her. "Four-five rounds have been fired," the official said.
He had allegedly reached the doctor's residence and rang the door bell following which Dhawan opened the door. Kumar then allegedly opened fire at him.
Kumar used to work as a security guard where the maid was working earlier and wanted to marry her, the official said.
