In his first public function after recovering from cardiac bypass surgery, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday met a group of Muslim girls and used the occasion to assert that no one had the license to "criticise or run down" other religions.

Though Singh's first official engagement was his meeting with a head of a State of an African country last week, his interaction with the children on Tuesday was his first public engagement.

Greeting the children on the occasion of Milad-un-Nabi, he said "our Constitution gives full freedom to the people to practice any religion of their choice, but it does not give anyone the license to criticize or run down other religions."

Addressing the students studying in Urdu medium schools in the capital on the occasion of Prophet Mohammed's birth anniversary, he said the country cannot prosper until women progress and girls were given equal opportunities to study in schools and colleges.

The Prime Minister said his government has done much to promote Urdu and promised to continue to do all that was necessary to promote the language.

He also expressed satisfaction over the good results of the Urdu medium schools, saying that Urdu language is a living example of "our Ganga-Jamuna tehzeeb (composite culture)".

Urdu loveBy: T.Jayaprakash | 11-Mar-2009 Reply | Forward It will be worthwhile for him to remember their experiment with prime time urdu news on DD Bangalore in 1995.Veerappa Moily the outgoing CM of karnataka tried to bring in a 15min urdu news at 8pm on DD bangalore without any prior announcement to appease the minorities for the election. After two days of news, riots broke out all over the city and went beyond the control of the police forces.More than 30 lost their lives and soon the govt made a U turn on their decision. This was a bitter lesson for Veerappa Moily that would be worth remebering for our PM if he as special feelings for urdu

RELIGION ONLY IN PLACE OF WORSHIPBy: B S GANESH | 10-Mar-2009 Reply | Forward Actually in the modern world religioin is to be observed and worshipped only in the respective houses and place of worship only. but in our country religion is mixed with politics only to hoodwink voters, confuse them create conspiracies to get votes. THIS IS BAD BUT IS BEING PRACTICED.
Plesae preach this to who really need it....By: Ashok Sen | 10-Mar-2009 Reply | Forward I welcome the reality of what the PM has said, although he dosen't mean it in real sense. What he says applies to Christian and Islamic sects as they are the ones who want others to convert to their religions, deriding the faith of others. Sanatana Dharma (Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist and Jain) never run down other religions and believe in multiple paths to salvation. So what ManmohanSingh said, apptly applies to Abrahnamic faiths, now hope he supports banning religious conversions of hindus to Sonia's religion under the grab of service funded by international destabalising forces. Hope he bans them completely to save native cultures! Does he dare to practice what he preach?
