Five days after the meeting of the Cauvery River Authority (CRA) for an amicable water-sharing formula ended without a solution, the Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday filed a fresh application in the Supreme Court, seeking immediate direction to Karnataka to ensure release of 2 TMC ft of Cauvery water at Mettur reservoir in the current year.
The applicant state is constrained to file the present application to obtain urgent orders since Karnataka is persisting with its unreasonable stand of not to share the waters of the inter-state river Cauvery, either as per the interim order or as per the distress sharing formula, and declined to implement the decision of the CRA, the plea stated.
A direction to release waters forthwith is absolutely imminent, failing which the applicant state of Tamil Nadu would not be able to sustain the Samba Crop, it said.
Farmers move SC
A group of farmers from Karnatakas Mandya district has also approached the Supreme Court, seeking a stay on the direction passed by the CRA to Karnataka to release 9,000 cusec of water for 25 days. They said the decision was taken in view of political compulsion of the ruling party at the Centre.
