CBI books Major Gen in assets case

    The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday registered a case of disproportionate assets against a Major General.

    Searches were conducted at a total of 12 places at Delhi, Jaipur, Shimla, Gurgaon and Mumbai. According to the FIR registered by CBI, Major General Anand Kumar Kapoor and his family members have six immovable properties worth Rs 5.33 crores (approx) at New Delhi, Shimla and Gurgaon.

    Kapoor is with the Army Ordnance Corps and posted with the South Western Command at Jaipur. In Delhi, the raid was carried out at 305 Forest Lane at Sainik Farms. “From Delhi raid we have found fixed deposit receipts worth Rs 1.30 crore, cash worth Rs 6 lakh, four bank lockers, 12 credit cards, bank balance around Rs 40 lakh,” said a CBI official.

    Apart from this, Kapoor’s two plots allotted by HUDA, Gurgaon, have been assessed at above Rs 1 crore. He also owns 2.2 acre of agriculture land at Brijvasan, along with two shops in Gurgaon at Vatika Tower and Unitech Trade Centre. The CBI also seized tiger and bear skin from his Delhi residence.

    It was also found that the accused and his family members have bank balances and fixed deposits to the tune of Rs 57.86 lakh (approx) and various other investments to the tune of Rs 1.21 crore (approx). The total disproportionate assets have been calculated at Rs 4.78 crore. “Incriminating documents pertaining to the properties have also been seized,” the official said.

    Reacting to the incident, Defence Minister AK Antony said that stringent action would be taken against the officer if found guilty. “The raids were conducted with the full knowledge of the Ministry of Defence. We won’t tolerate corruption,” Antony said.
