* Govt asked to announce compensation for victims in 12 days
A counsel of Bar Association on Friday told a Division Bench of Calcutta High Court, which is hearing the January 7 Netai killing case, that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has not included names of “influential persons” in its chargesheet despite being named by the witnesses.
“So the High Court, which is monitoring the investigation, should go through the case diary and the statement of the witnesses before disposing of the case,” advocate Sukhendu Sekhar Roy told the Division Bench of Chief Justice Jaynarayan Patel and Justice Ashim Kumar Roy.
Roy also alleged that some CBI officers involved in the probe took facilities from the state government and cited media reports. Those CBI officers should be shifted from the probe,Roy urged the Bench.
Following this, the Division Bench asked Roy to filed affidavits on the issue.
Meanwhile, the High Court gave 12 days time to the state government to come up with compensation package for the victims of the Netai killing.
While hearing the plea moved by the Bar Association demanding Rs 25 lakh as compensation for the next of kin of the deceased, the Division Bench said,”Normally the government pays Rs 5 lakh to the victim after the death of a person in an accident. So the government should decided the compensation amount considering incident,” and gave 12 days time for the government to decide on it. The Bench also added that it can direct the government to pay compensation of either Rs 5 lakh or Rs 25 lakh as demanded by the Bar Association, but the government should inform the court about the compensation package first.
Nine persons were killed and 28 others were injured in Netai village after alleged CPM goons fired at them. Passing an interim order on January 14,the High Court had directed the government to pay Rs 2 lakh each to the kin of the victims who died,Rs 1 lakh to those who suffered serious injuries, and Rs 50,000 to persons with minor injuries.
