  • The CBI, probing the rape and murder of the two women in Shopian, Neelofar and sister-in-law Asiya Jan, is set to exhume their bodies. Neelofar, 22, and her sister-in-law Asiya, 17, were found dead in a stream in Shopian on May 30. The government backtracked after claiming initially that the women had drowned.

Doctors confirmed the women had been raped and murdered.

The agency, which took over the probe on the court’s orders, sought permission from Shakeel Ahmad Ahangar, the brother of Aasiya and husband of Neelofar, and got his consent, sources said. The CBI recorded the consent of Ahanger and his father-in-law Moulvi Abdul Hai before the Judicial Magistrate, Shopian.

The CBI has asked for the exhumation on September 27. It will be carried out in the presence of a magistrate, a team of doctors, forensic experts and relatives. Doctors from New Delhi are is also expected to be present.
