Nearly three months after former deputy CMO Dr Y S Sachan died under mysterious circumstances inside Lucknow jail,a senior UP government official on Friday reportedly gave CBI a photocopy of a handwritten note which was allegedly found in Dr Sachan’s bag in the jail hospital immediately after his death.

Additional Director General of Prisons V K Gupta reportedly told the CBI,which is probing Sachan’s death, that he had given the original note to a senior government official. The note, purportedly a suicide note from Sachan, states that he is ending his life and no one is responsible for it.

Sources in the CBI said they will now write to the UP government, seeking the original note, and then send it to handwriting experts to verify if it was actually written by Sachan.

Earlier this year,Sachan was arrested for his alleged involvement in financial irregularities under NRHM,which came to light during the investigation of the murder of former CMO Dr B P Singh.

Later, the police claimed that Dr Sachan was the mastermind of twin murders — of Dr Singh’s as well as his predecessor Dr V K Arya who was shot dead on October 27,2010.

On June 22,Sachan was found dead in an unlit toilet on the unused first floor of the jail. His body rested on the commode and a belt was hanging around his neck with the other end tied to the toilet grill. There were eight deep cuts on the body.

Former senior superintendent of the jail SHM Rizvi had told the CBI that he had found the note and handed it over to Gupta. On Friday,CBI called Gupta to question him about the note, and the sequence of events inside the Lucknow jail just after Sachan’s death came to light.

Gupta, however, refused to say anything about the handwritten note today. He said that he was quizzed about the sequence of the events, the evidence and the circumstances in which Sachan’s body was found.

CBI officials,on the other hand, said that Gupta told them that Rizvi and the then jailor BS Mukund had handed him the note when he reached the spot. Rizvi reportedly told Gupta that the note was found in Sachan’s bag, which was kept on his bed inside the jail hospital. At the time of his death,Sachan was undergoing treatment at jail hospital.

Gupta also reportedly told CBI officials that he had handed over the note to a senior officer in the government.

Further,Gupta said that it was Rizvi who informed him about Sachan’s death. When he reached the jail, the body was lying in the corridor outside the toilet,Gupta told CBI officials.
