Spelling trouble for the Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh,the CBI on Tuesday registered two cases in connection with the multi-crore National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) scam. According to sources,the agencys investigations also show that Deputy Chief Medical Officer Y S Sachan,who died while in custody,was killed hours before he was to be arrested by the UP Police in connection with the NRHM scam. Probing Sachans murder as well as killings of two CMOs,the agency believes it can now join the dots between these and the NRHM scam. The CBI will be seeking remand of those arrested by the UP Police in the case,including former CMO Dr A K Shukla and three officials of the Health and Family Welfare Department of the state,on Friday. The questioning of those named in the chargesheet and accused of embezzlement of NRHM funds will be done on Friday. We will also be examining the investigative officer of the case since Sachan was questioned by the IO of the case inside the jail. The probe officer also told Sachan that he would be arresting him in connection with the scam on June 21. However,a day later,Sachan was found dead, said a top CBI official. Sachan had been arrested in connection with the murder of Lucknow CMO B P Singh. Some of the forensic data from the site where Sachan is believed to have been killed in jail is lost,admitted CBI officials. CBI searches jail for weapon The CBI team probing the Sachan murder Sachan today searched Lucknow district jail for a sharp-edged weapon that supposedly caused the wounds on Dr Sachans body. The autopsy had found eight ante-mortem injuries on his body inflicted by a sharp-edged weapon. CBI officials also summoned senior jail officials to search all sections of the jail hospital,including stores,wards and cabins. They also went through deserted corners in the premises. However,they could not find the weapon. The Lucknow Forensic Science Laboratory team had found a piece of a razor blade in the toilet on the first floor. A CBI official said that forensic and medical experts had ruled out the possibility that the razor blade was used to inflict the deep gashes.
