CBI submits status report on tainted HC lawyers

The special investigation cell of the CBI probing into the criminal cases against alleged tainted lawyers on Monday filed the status report related to the progress in the investigation before the Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court.

The CBI has been probing 11 such cases following directives of the high court. The court has fixed December 10 as next date for hearing in the matter. The Delhi team of CBI officials has been camping in Lucknow for last one month after registering fresh cases against the alleged tainted lawyers. The same cases were earlier registered at different police stations in Lucknow and the police handed over the details to the CBI following the high court order later.

A CBI official told The Indian Express that they have submitted sealed envelopes before the court containing the status report on each of the 11 cases being probed into by the agency. The team engaged in the investigation has recorded the statements of the complainants in the cases and the process of recording statement of the named accused is still going on,the official said. The UP government on November 19 handed over the investigation in 18 other cases registered against the lawyers at Lucknow police stations to the CB-CID. The high court had asked the state government to conduct investigation into the cases.

The Lucknow bench of the high court had issued an order to identify the lawyers with criminal antecedents and also to probe into the criminal cases registered against them while hearing the petition of lawyer Prashant Singh Gaur,on October 26. Gaur had sought the court’s intervention for initiating action against a group of lawyers involved in nefarious activities and facing criminal charges. The Lucknow Income-Tax Department has also been probing into the financial status of the alleged tainted lawyers.
