To provide food items at affordable prices to the poor, the state government has planned to provide pulses at subsidised rate under a Central government scheme. Under the plan, one kilogram pulse would be provided to each of the BPL families in the state, which number around 12.97 lakh according to the latest survey.
Talking to The Indian Express, L S M Salins, Secretary, Food and Civil Supplies, Haryana, said modalities of the scheme are being worked out in consultation with the Centre, which is likely to be implemented simultaneously throughout the country.
Imported black gram at Rs 32 per kg could be distributed to the poor at Rs 20 per kg. While the central government would pay the subsidy to the 8.52 lakh BPL families and those families which qualify for the Antodya Anna Yojana of the central government, subsidy to the rest of the BPL families in Haryana would be provided through funds from the state treasury. It would cost the state around Rs 19 crore per year.
Once the subsidised pulse scheme is implemented, the state government also plans to distribute soyabean among other pulses under the public distribution scheme (PDS), according to sources.
The Centre government has agreed to provide a subsidy of Rs 10 per kg for the pulses to the state government imported through its public sector undertakings for distribution to the weaker section of society. But the Central government is yet to decided which pulse to import for the purpose as different section of people have different preference for pulse varieties.
The Food and Supplies Department convened a meeting of top government officials of HAFED and Federation of Consumer Cooperative Wholesale Stores (CONFED) to finalise the scheme.
