Central, State govts fail to protect minorities' rights: AMUTA

Aligarh Muslim University Teachers' Association (AMUTA) has charged the Central and State governments with "failing to protect the rights of minority communities".

At a special meeting called on the issue of "Minority Rights" yesterday, the AMUTA alleged both the governments were "deceiving the minorities on the issue of justice and fair play".

In a statement today, AMUTA President Prof Abdul Qaiyyum and secretary, Prof Mustafa Zaidi said a resolution has been passed in the meeting stating,"failure of both the governments in implementing the Sachar Committee's recommendations showed both these governments were only interested in verbal assurances without any concrete action".

The statement further stated, "failure to check communal riots which have been repeatedly taking place in recent months had become a major source of concern for the minorities.

What was of grave concern is the fact that there were a large number of instances where the official machinery, instead of punishing rioters and mischief mongers, tried to give them protection".

The statement said, "A deliberate attempt is being made by certain forces in the country to dilute the role of minority educational institutions. Instead of instilling confidence in the minorities, the official machinery often tries to falsely implicate members of the minority community in false cases".

The AMUTA reiterated the Muslim community in India was "fully committed to the task of building a strong and great country where the rights of all sections including the marginalised ones are protected and preserved".

The Muslims would be "second to none in shouldering the responsibility of building a better India", it stressed.
