Centre declines to interfere in Varun case

The Centre has declined to interfere in Uttar Pradesh's decision to invoke the NSA against Varun.

The Centre has declined to interfere in Uttar Pradesh’s decision to invoke the National Security Act (NSA) against BJP’s Pilibhit candidate Varun Gandhi. Varun had submitted a representation to the Central Government requesting it to revoke the state Government’s order regarding his detention under the NSA.

Varun was recently released from jail for two weeks on the Supreme Court’s order after he gave an undertaking that he would not make any provocative speeches. His case would come up before the apex court on May 1.

On being contacted,Pilibhit District Magistrate Ajay Chauhan confirmed that the Union Home Ministry had informed him about its decision regarding the Varun case.

Sources said the Home Ministry (MHA) did not find “any material evidence or ground in the representation to justify revoking of the order or interfere in exercise of its power under section 14 of the Act,” a source in the state Government said.

Section 14(1) of the Act deals with the power of the Central Government to revoke the order made by a DM or Commissioner of Police or a state Government in connection with the NSA charges against a person.

The state Government has already confirmed the decision of the District Magistrate to invoke the NSA against Varun.

Sources said Varun had sought to postpone the date of his appearance before the NSA Advisory Board. He was supposed to appear before the board on April 28. “He has requested the authorities concerned to give him any date after April 28. He has also stated that his case is pending in the Supreme Court,” a source in the Government said.
