Centre has spent more than Rs 1,000 cr on Ludhiana: Tewari

Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari on Saturday said the Centre has spent more than Rs 1,000 crore on Ludhiana district through various schemes and plans. Presiding as the chairman during the district vigilance and monitoring committee meeting held at Bachat Bhawan in the Mini Secretariat, Tewari, the Ludhiana MP, urged authorities and officials at the district and local level to ensure that welfare schemes, started by the central and state governments, are implemented properly.

"Making the schemes accessible to the right beneficiaries is the only way to progress and raise the standard of living," he added. In the meeting, the Ludhiana MP reviewed various central government schemes like the Indra Awas Yojna, Swarn Jayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojna, PM Gram Sadak Yojna, MNREGA, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan, among others.

He directed all the officials and panchayat block officers to work 'honestly' towards implementing the projects like MNREGA and others and make sure that 'villagers are well aware of the scheme'. He also told the officials present from water supply department to `further improve the quality of drinking water' under the Rural Water Supply scheme. MP and co-chairman of the committee Sukhdev Singh Libra, Surinder Dabur, MLA Bharat Bhushan Ashoo, District Commissioner Rahul Tewari, district Congress president Pawan Dewan and ADC Rishipal Singh were also present.

Libra demanded that the work, on the road from Khanna to Khamana, was completed at the earliest while Tewari checked the status of five prime road projects under the PM Gram Sadak Yojna under way in the district. He also reportedly told MLA Darshan Singh Shivalik that a meeting of the Greater Ludhiana Area Development Authority (GLADA) would be called to discuss road projects for newly formed colonies.

Earlier in the day, the union minister inspected funds for the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM). DC Rahul Tewari also informed the minister that around 870 villages of the district have already computerised their land records.
