The Central government recently launched 'Swavalamban scheme' (also known as the National Pension System), a scheme to provide pension to the workers of unorganised sectors, marginal income earners and economically disadvantaged sections of society. Canara Bank observed November 19 as the Swavalamban Day. It coincided with the Founder's Day celebrations of the bank. A customers' meet was also organised at the Chandigarh circle office. J Tashi, banking ombudsman, RBI, Chandigarh, was the chief guest. Lalit Vaid, general manager of Canara Bank, Chandigarh circle, presided over the meeting.
Council demands change in timings of proposed train
Chandigarh: The Chandigarh Citizens' Council in a representation to Union Minister for Railways Pawan Kumar Bansal have demanded that the third Shatabdi proposed to Delhi should depart from Chandigarh between 1.30 and 2 pm, and the train should depart from Delhi between 8 and 8.30 pm. The representation further said that the timing should be such that it was conducive for international flights. The members also demanded that of the two existing Shatabdi trains plying to Delhi, only one should stop at Panipat and Kurukshetra, in order to save time.

Chandigarh: Dr. Daisy Sahni, professor and head of Department of Anatomy, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, has been elected as the president of North States Chapter Of Anatomical Society of India for 2012-13. More than 70 papers written by her have been published in national and international journals.
80 units of blood collected at pharmacy college
Chandigarh: The NSS unit of Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Pharmacy organised a blood donation and sugar testing camp on Tuesday, as part of the platinum jubilee celebrations of Sikh Educational Society and National Pharmacy Week. Around 80 units of blood was collected at the camp that was organised in collaboration with the Rotary and Blood Bank Society Resource Centre, and Bhor Diagnostic Lab.
