The proposal for a mechanised bird slaughterhouse may finally see the light of day as the Centre would be providing expertise for it to the Municipal Corporation (MC). The proposal, which was mooted around three years ago with the aim of providing hygienic chicken to the residents, had failed to take off.
In a communication to the Municipal Corporation, the Centre has offered expertise for the project. The Ministry of Animal Husbandry would be helping to set up similar slaughterhouses in other parts of the country too.
At present, the modern slaughterhouse that has been set up by the MC has provisions for slaughtering of goat, sheep, etc.
Only a temporary slaughterhouse is present for slaughtering birds. The proposed slaughterhouse would be set up in the Industrial Area.
When the proposal was mooted,it was suggested that provisions for slaughtering of 20,000 chicken be made. This has been increased to 40,000 birds now, considering that around 25,000 birds are slaughtered every day. Keeping in view future demand, the capacity has been increased.
For the past three years the Municipal Corporation has been making provisions in the budget for setting up the slaughterhouse, for which the total estimated cost is Rs 12 crore. In the budget for the year 2009-10,a provision of Rs 9.2 crore had been made while in the subsequent year this was decreased to Rs 7 crore.
A Municipal Corporation official said that the aim is to ensure that residents get hygienic chicken.
The birds are slaughtered by the meat shop owners in unhygienic conditions.
The meat sellers in the city are not too pleased with the proposal. In fact, the civic bodys move to ask them to get the birds slaughtered at the temporary slaughterhouse, too, has been opposed by them. A meat seller claimed that customers ask for freshly slaughtered meat; so they cannot get all the birds slaughtered at once.
