Union Minority Affairs Minister K Rahman Khan on Monday said that neither the past CPM government, nor the present TMC government were fulfilling their responsibility to uplift minorities in the state. Khan was speaking at an event for minorities organised by the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee.
"The condition of Muslims in Bengal is the worst according to the Sachar Committee report. Both the CPM and TMC have done nothing worth mentioning to address their plight," he said. He also slammed the state's policy of giving honorarium to Muslim clerics. "The government should take up programmes for minorities which are useful for their socio economic and educational uplift. What is lacking among Muslims here is education," he said.
Union minister Deepa Dasmunsi, also present at the event, said the Centre had released funds to the tune of Rs 685.79 crore for several development programmes of the minorities which the state was "misusing".
