The Calcutta High Court today asked the Centre and the state government to file a status report on the use of solar energy as well as renewable energy in the state.
Moving a PIL on the use of solar energy, environmentalist Subash Dutta suggested that the High Court should set up a expert monitoring committee to look into issue.
After the hearing a Division Bench of Justice Pianki Chandra Ghosh and Justice Shukla Kabir (Sinha) asked the Advocate General Bolai Roy and counsel of the central government to place their response on the plea. The case will come up for hearing on December 22. Dutta today pleaded that the there was plenty of scope to generate solar power in the state particularly in the rural areas. The State Electricity Regulatory Commission (SERC) had asked the different power generating agencies to generate six-seven per cent power of the capacity. But it was not yet implemented in the state, alleged Dutta.
The use of solar power would reduce the fossil fuel, which would in turn curb the air pollution, said Dutta. Moreover, there was mandatory provisions in the building plan rule of the Calcutta Municipal Corporation Act and West Bengal Municipal Act to set up solar panel on the roof top in the high rise buildings. But this provisions were also not implemented in the state, alleged Dutta.
