CES 2013: Tablet with flexible display, waterproof phone launched

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2013 began in Las Vegas, USA, on Tuesday. As expected, several exciting products were on show. We bring you some gadgets with the potential to be game-changers.

Sony Xperia Z

Sony Xperia Z is the latest to join the 5-inch phone bandwagon. Featuring a 1080-pixel HD display, the body that's just 7.9 mm thick. The phone is pretty light at just 140 grams. The phone has sturdy Gorilla Glass at the front and the back. The best feature is that the phone is dust and water resistant. Sony says the phone will work even when submerged in a metre of water for 30 minutes. Another cool feature is what Sony calls "wet finger tracking", which means that you can use the phone even when it is wet. The ports on the phone are covered. Although it has been done to make it water resistant, some users may find them difficult to access. The Android handset market is crowded, but unique water and dust resistance give the Xperia Z an edge.

PaperTab

If you are among those who have often found a tablet too inflexible to feel like a book, the 10.7-inch PaperTab might be what you've been missing. As the name says, it feels just like paper. It is thin and flexible (can be bent). The tablet has been developed by Plastic Logic and has an Intel processor. Its flexible screen is touch-enabled and users can combine many PaperTabs into one giant reading surface by placing them side by side. The bad part is that the tablet will be connected to the processor via a data cable. The prototype unit is on display at CES 2013, so the final version might work differently.

Huawei Ascend Mate

Phones and TVs are segments where every manufacturer seems to be doing its best to make the biggest product. Five-inch phones have begun to become commonplace and are available for as less as Rs 9,000. Just when you thought that phones could not get any bigger, Huawei stepped in with Ascend Mate, the 6.1-inch Goliath that runs Android Jelly Bean. The display is 720 pixels and the phone has a quad core processor, 2GB RAM and an 8-megapixel camera. Just like Nokia Lumia 920, you can use Huawei Ascend Mate when wearing gloves. Good luck fitting it in your pockets.
