  • Himachal Pradesh is ready to begin distribution of free CFL bulbs to nearly 16.3 lakh domestic consumers under Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal’s innovative energy saving scheme — Atal Bijli Bachat Yojana —conceived almost four months back.

On November 23, Dhumal is flying to Kullu, an energy-surplus district, to launch the scheme, which is expected to cost the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board Rs 80 crore.

Two leading CFL manufacturers — M/s HPL-Socomec, which has secured the mainly supply order for providing 10 lakh packs (four bulbs each) of CFL bulbs —while the rest of the supplies will be made by M/s Phoenix, another major CFL manufacturer.

Himachal Pradesh expects to save at least 72 MW of power everyday on full implementation of the scheme.

R.K. Jain, HPSEB’s chairman, has already appointed member (Administration) Nisha Singh and HPSEB secretary Dr M.P. Sood as nodal officers to oversee the distribution of bulbs to consumers. When contacted, HPSEB secretary Dr M.P. Sood confirmed, “The distribution of CFL bulbs will start on November 23.”Currently, a team of HPSEB engineers are on the job to inspect the CFL bulbs to be supplied by the two companies.
