Day-long protest to culminate with the party’s representation to Prez
To mount pressure on the UPA government to approve the Gujarat Control of Organised Crime (GUJCOC) Act, the Gujarat BJP has planned to send all the 117 elected members of the state Legislative Assembly to New Delhi for a daylong dharna. This was decided in the recently concluded national executive meet of the party at Bangalore.
Gujarat BJP President Purshottam Rupala told Newsline that the party has planned for an elaborate agitation programme against the UPA government for getting a clearance on GUJCOC.
“Our MLAs will soon stage a dharna at New Delhi to demand an approval for the same. They will then hand over a representation to the President at the end of the day in this connection," he said. He, however, added that the date for the programme has not yet been fixed. It will be passed on to the state unit of the party by the national leadership soon, he said.
He said the existing laws are not good enough to handle the threats of terrorism. “But unfortunately, the Congress has always equated the issue of terrorism with Islam and is afraid to antagonise the community by clearing a strong anti-terror law. As a party, it has paid the heaviest price to terrorism. It lost two of its top leaders to the menace. It should have been the leader in devising the strong anti-terror mechanism, but instead is all opposed to the Act in a bid to appease the minorities," he added.
