Chand divorces Fiza over phone from London

Fiza said Chand called her up first to say a terse “talaq,talaq,talaq”,as provided in Islam to annul a marriage,and then sent her two separate SMSes stating: “Through telephonic conversation,I have divorced you. Your mehr (compensation for divorce) as well as maintenance will reach you shortly. From Chand Mohammad”.

Talking to Newsline over the phone,Fiza accused Chand of threatening her with consequences. The 37-year-old former assistant advocate general of Haryana said: “He said wait and see what me and my family do to you after the forthcoming elections.”

“Without letting me speak,he banged down the phone and never responded again,” claimed Fiza,who is set to file a fresh criminal complaint against Chand on similar charges as levelled in her first complaint.

“The police had rejected my complaint earlier on the basis of Chand’s fax message that I am still his wife and he remains a Muslim. Now that he has formally disowned me,I will press for action against Chand,” she said.

Fiza said Chand did not adopt a valid procedure to divorce as per Islamic rites though she admitted that divorce,if given properly,could not be rejected by a wife under Islam.

Fiza also held Chand responsible for her father’s death. “I innocently believed Chand’s expressions of love and marriage proposals. He told me that he was upset with his wife’s extra-marital affair. My father suffered a cardiac arrest when he came to know about his strong insistence to marry me,” said Fiza.

Meanwhile,in a fax to the Press Trust of India from Illford,Essex,UK,Chand sent two pages of a “Memorandum of Divorce” in the name of “Fiza Beghum” saying he has divorced her through a “telephone conversation” from the Notary Public Office there.
