Chandra promoted as IGP, no decision on IPS promotees

With the Punjab government on Thursday promoting Rakesh Chandra as the inspector general of police (IGP), the Punjab Police now has 45 IGPs. The government, however, is yet to issue orders of promotion for seven Punjab Police Service officers — recently-promoted as IPS officers — as deputy inspector generals of police (DIGs).

Chandra, who is currently DIG (Training Commando), has been promoted as IGP with effect from October 1, 2012. A 1984-batch CRPF officer, Chandra came to the state on deputation in 2002 as the deputy principal secretary to then chief minister. He was later absorbed in the Punjab Police in 2006. He is second officer from the central police organisations to have become the IGP. Chandra, who retries in November 2021, had headed anti-insurgency operations in J&K, Punjab and Mizoram and has received President's Police Medal for meritorious services.

Meanwhile, recently, 18 PPS officers were inducted into the IPS. On December 31, 2012, the government had initially issued instructions giving charge of DIG to seven newly promoted IPS officers of 1998 batch. According to sources, orders were promotion were issued and thus, the press note on December 31, but it was later withheld due to some technical error.

When contacted, Principal Secretary (Home and Justice) D S Bains said: "Recently, 18 PPS officers were promoted to IPS, but they all still are SPs. No officer has been promoted as DIGs. Once they are given posting, they will be promoted as DIGs. They have been just allotted batches as per their seniority.''
