Suspecting that a neighbour of the 72-year-old woman murdered in Charkop a few months ago might have “some knowledge” about the incident and identity of the accused, the police are planning to subject her to narco analysis test to find out “what she knows”.
The police, however, have ruled out her involvement in the crime.
Surekha Narvekar (72), a widow staying alone in her Charkop house, was found murdered on the night of June 22 after neighbours complained about stench from her house. The Charkop police had discovered that the victim’s head had been smashed with a washing baton and her jewellery worth Rs 1.15 lakh was missing. A case of murder and robbery was registered by the police.
A Charkop police official said, “While we were questioning the residents of Dhavalgiri Society in Sector 4 of Charkop, we realised that a woman there might know about the identity of the killer but is not forthcoming with the information for some reasons. Though she is not involved in the crime, we suspect that she does have some knowledge about the murder and identity of the killer. So, we have decided to subject her to narco-analysis test.”
The police, however, have refused to reveal the identity of the woman.
DCP (Zone 11) Sanjay Bannerjee confirmed the police’s plan of narco test on the woman but refused to divulge anything further.
Initially, the police had suspected involvement of some construction labourers who were working on an under-construction structure opposite the house, but their probe revealed nothing suspicious. “We suspect that the killer was known to the victim as there were no signs of forced entry. Besides, the houses in the area are closely placed and any stranger in the locality would have raised suspicions,” said the official.
