Hours after two persons were killed in police firing this afternoon in Bhiwandi, the charred bodies of two constables were found in Vanjarpati, about 200 metres from a local police outpost.

Thane police commissioner D Shivanandan confirmed that the bodies of constables Jagtap and Gangude were found around midnight from the area. He said that investigations were on to determine the circumstances that led to their death. Senior police officials from the area rushed into a meeting soon after the bodies were found.

Earlier in the day, two people were killed when the police opened fire to quell a violent protest by around 1,000 people, demonstrating against the construction of a police station at Bhiwandi’s Islampura beside a local mosque.

Around 2 pm, a mob of about 1,000, mostly members of the Raza Academy, a Muslim religious organisation, stormed the construction site and tried to demolish the partially built building. They also started pelting stones, due to which the police resorted to lathicharge and then opened fire. Bhiwandi DCP R D Shinde and DCP (Special Branch) A S Deshbhratar were among the 14 police officials injured.

Tension continued to grip the area. An angry mob, later in the night, set six buses afire parked in Bhiwandi bus stand and on the newly-built Rajiv Gandhi bridge.
