The newly elected mayor Anu Chatrath promised the people a ‘clean and green city’ while taking over the post on Friday. Chatrath said she would ensure that a policy is put in place for maintenance of greenbelts and parks.

She also assured to work in co-operation with the officials of the Municipal Corporation and the UT Administration. The past year has seen constant tussles between the MC and Administration officials. The demand for more power for elected representatives dominated all debates during the year.

During her earlier term as mayor in 2005,the MoU for setting up the garbage processing plant at Dadumajra was signed. Now,the plant finds itself in the thick of controversy with no decision being taken even after numerous inquiries were conducted to ascertain its dismal functioning.

Chatrath said that the decision for setting up the plant was taken keeping in mind the requirement of waste disposal in the city. She says,“The plant was set up as the landfill was fast filling up and was considered the most suitable technology at the time. Now,it is for the Municipal Commissioner to decide on the issue.”
