Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan ordered Tuesday a judicial probe into the Dhule communal riot that killed six people and left several, including police personnel, injured.

On a review visit to the town, CM promised people a thorough inquiry to ascertain facts and punish those responsible. A retired high court judge will conduct the probe.

CM said, "Although a primary report has been sought from officials, we would like to go into detail to ensure such communal violence is not repeated in Dhule."

Chavan also announced Rs 5 lakh for families of those killed and Rs 3 lakh for the injured. The government will also compensate for houses destroyed and damaged as per 2004 norms.

Home minister R R Patil, who accompanied CM, told the media, "There are several factors behind the communal riot that took place in Dhule on January 6. We will deal with the situation firmly."

Following acid attacks on police, including senior women officers, the government has suggested relocation of the battery industry in the middle of the city. The state wants to prevent misuse of acids the industry requires.
