Chhattisgarh deaths: NHRC seeks report

Almost two weeks after 19 people, including some alleged Maoists, were gunned down by security forces in Chhattisgarh

Almost two weeks after 19 people, including some alleged Maoists, were gunned down by security forces in Chhattisgarh, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought a report from the Director General,CRPF,and the Chhattisgarh government.

Sources said the notice was issued on a complaint filed by rights activist R H Bansal, who is also editor of the Human Rights Observer.

The CRPF and Chhattisgarh government have been asked to explain the sequence of events leading to the encounter and reply to the accusations that many innocent villagers were killed. They have been given four weeks to reply.

The state has already ordered a judicial inquiry.

In his complaint,Bansal sought a probe by an independent agency. He requested that the central and state governments be asked to pay compensation to the next of kin of the innocent villagers who were killed.

Incidentally,as per NHRC guidelines, state governments must send detailed reports of all encounter deaths to the NHRC within 48 hours of the incidents.
