BJP leader Sushma Swaraj on Wednesday accused Union Home Minister P Chidambaram of “violating propriety” by “leaking” a letter on the issue of Varun Gandhi’s security that he sent her in a cover marked confidential which he got hand-delivered to her.
“Was he trying to score points by leaking the letter, or did he really want to discuss security for Varun Gandhi? Chidambaram wrote to me asking me to meet him to discuss Varun’s security and while I kept the matter a secret, discussing the contents of the letter with no one except for Advaniji, he leaked it to the media. This action is in contrast to the spirit of the letter,” alleged the deputy Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha. She, however, added that she would meet the Minister whenever he gave her time.
Sushma had raised the issue of Varun’s security in the House on Tuesday, accusing him of adopting a “lackadaisical attitude”. Chidambaram dismissed the charge, saying that the BJP MP had been provided “adequate protection in accordance with inputs of intelligence agencies”.
In his letter to Sushma, Chidambaram said the “Government had taken into account the inputs provided by the intelligence agencies”. “As in the case of every other protected person, the level of security provided to Varun is periodically reviewed,” the letter read.
“While I would be happy to respond in the House and disclose the level of security provided to Shri Varun Gandhi, I thought that would defeat the very purpose of providing security to Shri Varun Gandhi. I, therefore, suggest that, if you wish, you may kindly meet me and I shall take you into confidence about the security cover provided to Shri Varun Gandhi,” read the letter.
