Union Home Minister P Chidambaram is scheduled to visit Koraput on Thursday to review the preparedness of the security forces in taking on the Maoists even as the rebels continued to block all access roads to Narayanpatna block, where 100 CRPF and 60 Orissa State Armed Police (OSAP) personnel had been stationed along with local policemen.
Orissa Home Secretary Aditya Padhi said Chidambaram would speak to the district police officials as well as the top brass of Orissa police at Koraput on the inter-state joint anti-Maoist operation that is expected to start some time soon. "Our demand for additional central paramilitary forces would also come up for discussion during the meeting," he said.
The state Government on Wednesday airlifted food and other essential commodities for the police and paramilitary forces who have been confined to Narayanpatna since June 15. Padhi said that a helicopter made two sorties from Koraput to Narayanpatna carrying rice, dal, sugar, kerosene and dry food for the personnel stationed at Narayanpatna.
On June 17, eight personnel of Orissa Special Security Force (OSSF) and a driver were killed when the Maoists blew up their jeep in a landmine blast near Narayanpatna. The OSSF personnel were trying to remove roadblocks set up by Naxals to clear the route to Narayanpatna.
Chidambaram would also visit the relief camps in Kandhamal on Friday where over 2000 people have been staying since August 25, 2008 when riots broke out after the murder of Laxmanananda Saraswati.
Meanwhile, concerned over the upsurge in Naxal violence in the state, Orissa Government on Thursday decided to strictly enforce laws under land reform act and laws relating to scheduled area. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has asked the officials to ensure that not an inch of tribal land remained in possession of non-tribals illegally. "The government has decided to provide legal assistance to tribals who are unable to file cases against alleged land encroachers," said Revenue Minister Suryo Patro.
