Chief Justice Khil Raj Regmi sworn in Nepal Prime Minister amid protest

Chief Justice Khil Raj Regmi took oath of office and secrecy as Chairman of the Electoral Council of Ministers amidst protest from different political parties civil society groups out the President's house. President Ram Baran Yadav admistered the oath of office in the morning, nearly eight hours after Baburam Bhattarai tendered his resignation past midnight. Regmi who will continue to hold the position of the Chief Justice without actively engaging in the day to day affairs of the court administered the oath of office to Madhav Ghimire as the lone minister appointed today.

As per the understanding reached among the four political parties last night, Regmi will be heading the 11-member electoral government that will hold election on June 21. He took the oath of office barely two hours before the Supreme court was to take up for hearing two cases challenging the appointment of an incumbent CJ as the head of the Executive as well.

As the President's house was preparing for the swearing in formalities, Communist Party of Nepal-Maoists joined by some civil society groups held protest demonstration outside, clashing with the police in at least two places.
