Chief Minister to skip WBHRC event

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will not attend the programme organised by West Bengal Human Rights Commission (WBHRC) to commemorate International Human Rights Day at Calcutta High Court on December 10.

The CM's decision assumes significance in the wake of WBHRC chairman Justice (retired) Ashok Ganguly's decision to order compensation to Jadavpur University professor Ambikesh Mahapatra, who was arrested for allegedly ciculating a cartoon featuring Mamata and Trinamool leader Mukul Roy. WBHRC's decision had not gone down well with the CM. "We had invited the CM. I don't know whether she will attend the programme. We had printed her name on the invitation card," said Ganguly.

Sources in the CMO said WBHRC has been informed that Mamata will not attend the programme. State Law Minister Chandrima Bhattacharjee too said she won't attend the function "because of some prior commitment".
