Chill to continue,says weatherman

A day after the city recorded season’s lowest mercury levels at 16.4°Celsius in Santacruz and 21.2°Celsius in Colaba,Mumbai continued to experience a chill in the air on Monday.

A day after the city recorded season’s lowest mercury levels at 16.4°Celsius in Santacruz and 21.2°Celsius in Colaba,Mumbai continued to experience a chill in the air on Monday. Similar conditions will prevail for the next two to three days, said the Met department.

On Monday, the suburbs recorded a minimum temperature of 17.1°Celsius,almost a degree below its normal of 18°Celsius while the island city recorded 21.4°Celsius,marginally higher than its normal of 21°Celsius. Weather officials have attributed this phenomenon to a western disturbance in the northern parts of the country.

“The cold air coming down from the north to the south has lead to decreasing temperatures,” said Ajay Kumar,Meteorologist at India Meteorological Department (IMD). “However, the system is now moving from the west to the east. Thus, the temperatures will remain similar for two to three days after which they may increase or decrease depending upon the system, which forms,” he said.

Meanwhile,Day-time temperatures, which had dropped by two to three degrees on Sunday, rose to 33.4° Celsius at Santacruz and 32.8°Celsius at Colaba on Monday. These were above their normal of 31° Celsius for the island city and 32° Celsius for the suburbs. Kumar said this is because of lack of moisture in the air.
