Queue at a polling booth in Itanagar on Tuesday. A huge 72 per cent turned out in Arunachal Pradesh

To keep underlining Arunachal Pradesh as a “disputed” territory is in tune with its stated position but Beijing caught New Delhi by surprise on Tuesday when it went public with an unusually strong statement opposing Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s election campaign-related visit to the state earlier this month. India, for its part, expressed its “disappointment and concern” over the statement that came on a day when the state recorded a 72 per cent voter turnout.

It’s learnt that yesterday itself the Chinese side had lodged a protest through official channels. While China has routinely protested visits by prominent Indian leaders to Arunachal Pradesh, the decision to go public has not gone down well with New Delhi. Only recently, Beijing had objected to the Dalai Lama’s plan to visit the state next month.

Beijing’s statement comes two weeks before Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi travels to India for the India-Russia-China trilateral meet of foreign ministers in Bangalore on October 26-28. In fact, the Ministry of External Affairs was caught on the wrong foot as it had scheduled a meeting today with Chinese Ambassador Zhang Yan to discuss Yang’s visit. Instead, it turned out to be a meeting where Indian concerns were conveyed.

It started with a suo motu statement by Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ma Zhaoxu today: “China-India border has never been officially demarcated. The Chinese Government’s position on the disputed area has been consistent and clear. China expresses its strong dissatisfaction on the visit by the Indian leader to the disputed area in disregard of China’s grave concerns. We urge the Indian side to take China’s solemn concerns seriously and do not stir up trouble at the disputed area with a view to ensuring the sound development of China-India relations.”

Tough LeadershipBy: Pravin Mhapankar | 14-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward The concept of Tough Leadership is totally absent in our political structure, like Iran and North Korea having tough leaders they totally ignore what leaders of the other countries think about their decisions like Missile building or atomic reactor building. If our country have tough leaders then not only China but also Pakistan think to take any action against India in any matter.
China chooses Arunachal pot again...By: Ramakrisanan | 14-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Again, China chooses Election Day to stir the Arunachal pot! Why? : Our democracy is fake and our leaders are fake. Leaders are accustomed to to continue Firangi Raj in kala chamda. They use people as a weapon in their loot menace. I do not understand the headache they have on the right of foreign people or leader to visit or express their views on their own. Why vulture eye on Kabul, Kathmandu, Dhaka, Colombo, Thimpu and Islamabad? Maintain the home first! If Sikkim, Assam and Half of Kashmir could be annexed by India then why not Arunachal by China? If friendly neighbours are being hurted continuously and destabilized and they could align and break the veil of colonial hegemony.
Bilateral relationsBy: Indi | 14-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Shelve off all bilateral relationship with china and expel its diplomats from India. Ban all chinese products in Indian and all chinese companies from entering to India. Indian gaints in software should cut off all relations with china and should stop helping them in the software industry. Mean while India should increase its military might and increase the defence presence in Arunachal Pradesh. There should be army posts dotting the whole state. India should also keep a vigil on the border using the satellite technology. India should also be vary of Nepal and deal with it by an iron hand. It is really disgusting that small countries like pakistan and nepal are troubling us. But then again, to take care of India, we need a patriotic and nationalist govt which cannot be seen in upa and congress. Until and unless govt shows the commitment and patriotism to tackle Indias problems, India always would be in trouble by hostile enemies. Even an ant can cause trouble to elephant. India beware.
china chooses election dayBy: peshori ahuja | 14-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward The post of the Minister of External affairs is very important. It requires the minister to keep his eyes as well his ears open.We are surprised to read the subject report. It seems our Minister of EA entirely depends on his ministry to bring out what he ought to be knowing as an ordinary citizen of India. We would request the PM to let the common man know whether his ministers should also have resources to know what is going on in and around the country or they should entirely depend on the cuttings of reports presented to them by their ministries.
Arunachal PradeshBy: Premsingh Kannolli | 14-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward void unnecessary conflict.Leave it to be Calm so that all be happy.
