Principal says MU move will set bad precedent

Mumbai University has issued hall tickets to 35 third-year B.Com students of Chinai College of Commerce and Economics, who were “denied” hall tickets over poor attendance. The final exams begin on March 24.

“At a time when other students were concentrating on studies,my friends and I were running around to meet university officials for hall tickets,” Puja Khut, final year B.Com student from Chinai, said.

College principal Malini Johri said,“We have no idea about the university decision. The students have already missed their practical exams. By doing this, the university is violating its own ordinance. Tomorrow, every other student will have low attendance and will request the university to let them appear for the exam. This isn’t correct.”

Students say they hardly have any time time to prepare for the exam. “Only one day is left for the exam and I will not be able to complete the entire course but I will work hard,” said student Ridhi Lukha .

MVLU and Chinai College has been entangled in controversies since 2001-02 when news of the college shutting down to make way for a commercial structure surfaced. Last month, students ransacked the college along with political activists after some students were suspended over low attendance. The management and principal said the rumour of college closing down was spread by the teachers’ union after the college took disciplinary action against them for not completing stipulated teaching hours.

Senate member Sudhakar Tamboli said,“We have been following up the issue with the varsity exam section and the Vice-Chancellor. We were worried that by the time university gives its report, students will miss their exams. I went with the students to the exam department where they were issued hall tickets.” Prof Vilas Shinde, controller of examination,Mumbai University, said it wasn’t the university but the college that denied hall tickets to students. “We sent the hall tickets. The college, however, withheld tickets of students with low attendance. We received applications from these students and issued hall tickets to them.”
