Chirag United couldn't have asked for a better start to their I-League campaign. After starting with a victory, the Kolkata club scored their second successive win, this time beating Mumbai FC 2-1 at the Yuba Bharati Krirangan on Friday.
For the Mumbai club, which has now lost twice in two outings, custodian Amit Singha Roy should take much of the blame for faltering in the early phase of the match - that's when Chirag took charge of the proceedings.
Chirag started with a bang as their Brazilian striker Edmilson Marques struck in the 7th and 14th minute. It took Mumbai FC 66 minutes to find a goal when New Zealander Kayne Vincent converted a spot-kick.
Mumbai FC paid dearly as their goalie Singha Roy fumbled big time in both the occasions when Edmilson struck. He let in the first goal when he failed to narrow the angle that was expected of him. And the second strike saw the goalkeeper fail to grip Edmilson's left-footer that was on target.
Clearly, Mumbai FC's sloppy performance only reflects the club's unenviable financial condition, with the team for the country's premier championship being formed almost overnight.
Reeling under the double strike from Edmilson, the Mumbai FC players began to show some resilience, but only towards the fag of the match, but the contest was over by then.
