    Both sides in the case gave a cautious reaction to the ruling. “This is a very complex judgment on which it would be premature to make any comment until the House of Lords has handed down its judgment,” said a statement from Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs.

    “It does look encouraging,” said Marks & Spencer. “However it is a complex matter and we are reviewing the decision with our advisers.”
