In another twist in its battle with the Left Government in Kerala, the Catholic Church is bringing out a textbook for sex education in schools.

The textbook is an answer to the Government’s sex education programme, which the Church decried as “corrupting and dangerous”. The Family Commission of the Kerala Catholic Bishops Conference (KCBC), which met at the Pastoral Orientation Centre here, has decided to bring out a textbook on sexuality for moral guidance to children, reports the September 16 issue of the Sunday Shalom, the weekly newspaper of all episcopal churches.

The Commission reviewed the sex education book brought out by the Department of Public Instruction. It has observed that the Government’s book on sex for school children may create sexual anarchy.

“The Government’s book approaches sex in the physiological sense alone and fails to appreciate other aspects,” KCBC Family Commission Secretary Fr Jose Kottayil said.

“The book on sexuality to be brought out by the Commission will discuss physiological as well as psychological, spiritual and moral dimensions of sex,” he said. The book will be published before March 2008 and will be available from the next academic year.

Doctors, theologians and teachers will be involved in the preparation of the book. KCBC Education Commission and other commissions will also be involved in preparing the content for the book.
